Visiting New York anytime soon? Well if you are hitting The Big Apple, plan to check out the fashion district and shop for your latest DIY project. Shopping for fabric, notions and sewing supplies in NYC can be a great experience.
Here are my top 3 DIY pit stops:
Mood Fabrics – If you have watched an episode of Project Runway, you know about Mood Fabrics. This third floor fabric institution has a wide selection of EVERYTHING. Seeking the latest color or material that graced the runway? Your best chance is to locate it at Mood. I bought a yard of a cotton duck Marc Jacobs fabric!! It is beautiful and and I can’t wait to sew it into a bag.
M & J Trimming – Looking for the latest trim and can’t find it? M & J Trimming has everything. I was looking for something different and came out with neon yellow epoxy nail heads [ plus pom pom trim, spikes and neon rope]. I had to buy it all. Who knows what I will make, but I love having this stuff in my stash.
Steinlauf and Stoller – This is old school NYC with some attitude. Don’t go for the service, but to get a taste of what the garment district has to offer.. I replaced my long lost metal french curve. It was fun to stand by the cash register and get ignored by the too cool for school moody employee. Buying it reminded me of my NYC intern days.
Here are some images of my stash:
Mood – Marc Jacobs and white eyelet fabric, close out metal zippers
M & J Trimming – Pom pom trim, neon and metal nail heads, white and neon yelow rope
Steinlauf & Stoller – Metal french curve, graphic ruler, seam riper and an Ezy-Pull threader
Happy sewing!
