DIY.. Flirty Lace Skirt

in Fabric on 08/05/13

Inspiration.. done.  Now it’s time to get working on the pattern.

I made a version of this flirty skirt a few years ago.  I copied it from a J.Crew sequin skirt that was $200.  It’s a real simple pattern and I made the skirt for under $25!  Hello bargain.

Materials Needed:

  • Fabric – Lace and lining materials
  • Elastic for waistband – I used a 3/4″ elastic
  • Thread, pins, scissors, Dritz disappearing ink pen
  • Drafting paper, pencil, pen, rulers
  • Pattern drafting attitude

8 Easy steps:

Create your pattern. Develop the skirt self and lining – a large rectangle 21″ x 16″.  Also trace off the facing piece –  21″ x 3″

Cut your fabric – Cut 2 pieces each from the lace and lining

Sew the sides seams for lace skirt, lining and facing. I chose to use my serger to sew this entire garment together. I also finished the facing and lining hems with the serger

Prepare the top edge to sew. Layer the pieces – first the lace, then sandwich the facing and then the skirt lining.  Pin the entire top edge and sew with a 1/2″ SA.  Remember to backstitch

Press this seam. Turn so the lace is rightside out and press the top edge seam yet again

Turn so the lining is facing out – mark along the facing for elastic placement. Start 1/2″ down from top edge. This will create a nice little frilly edge.  Give a little extra wiggle room room for the elastic – approx 1/8″ – 1/4″.  Mark for the top and bottom

Sew on the dotted/marker lines.  Both at the top and bottom seams.  Along the bottom seam, leave a small opening for the elastic

Thread your elastic through.  Fit on yourself to size the elastic.  Sew the opening closed

Pair with a white tank top,  chunky necklace and some killer shoes and you are good to go.

Happy sewing

Sexy and under $25! that’s awesome, great step by step instructions. How about something for men like JCrew shorts?
