My brain has been on DIY overdrive. Not sure if this is a good thing or not?
I’m heading to Napa for a girls trip in a few weeks. I am LONG overdue for a fun weekend away and I can’t wait to see my girlfriends. With Napa approaching, wine and travel ideas have been popping into my head. Especially when I should be asleep.
So with wine country on the brain, I thought it would be fun to make a colorful, fabric bottle cover. Not only are they cute, but also a great accessory to a bottle of wine. Make one of these and I’m sure it will be a favorite housewarming or hostess gift.
Materials needed:
- Matching/coordinating fabric – Fat quarters work well!
- Sewing supplies – thread, scissors, pins, disappearing ink pen or pencil, sewing machine
- Empty bottle of wine for tracing
- Drafting supplies – tracing paper, pen and paper scissors
- Iron and ironing board
Alright, let’s get sewing:
Step 1 – Develop your pattern. I made my pattern by tracing the bottom of the wine bottle and adding a 1/4″. I then decided on the height of the cover and gave the top edge a fun curve. Remember to add seam allowances to all areas.
In each fabric – cut out a bottom and main piece.
On each straight side – mark 3 1/2″ down from the top edge. This is very important and is the indicator for where you stop/start sewing.
Place right sides together and pin. Starting at one of the 3 1/2″ points, sew with a 1/4″ SA. Leave a small 1″ opening along the top edge. Continue sewing until the other mark. Backstitch.
Step 2 – Press, press, press your seams. I say this all the time, but I am a big believer in pressing ALONG the way.
With right sides still together, jiggle the top around so you can place the straight edges together. Pin. Starting at the pencil mark, sew a 1/4″ SA along the straight edge to the bottom. Backstitch at the bottom and run off the material. Repeat on the other side.
You will now have completed the self and the lining. Pull through and press.
Step 3 – You are almost finished. Pin the circles to the bottom and sew around with a 1/4″ SA.. Press!!
Pull everything through your 1″ opening at the top. Repress the top edge and topstitch the seam closed.
Happy sewing.
PS – Mother’s Day is coming up.. Give her a bottle of wine and make her a wine cover!
