DIY…Make A Journal Cover

in DIY Projects, Fat Quarter Projects on 02/07/13

This journal is part of a Sew A Long hosted by Darling Adventures.  This was my first ever sew along and I have to admit I really enjoyed it. What a fun and creative project for a group of people!

Last week I wrote a blog post about the different ideas I had in mind.  In the end I decided to create a journal for my friend Trish over at The Purple Fig.  She is the editor and creator of TPF and one of the most talented people I know.

My favorite part was coming up with the cover design.  Trish lives in Toronto. We no longer live in the same city or see each other as much as we used to.  She has a great sense of humor and is a mom to 2 awesome little boys.   So, I thought it would be fun to applique a quirky caption on it.

One option in the Darling Adventure’s tutorial is to use the same fabric for the lining and the flaps. Unfortunately, I ran out of the small grey polka dot fabric I used for the lining. It was late at night and had to improvise…  In my fat quarter stash, I found a similar grey pattern for the inside flaps. I was a little worried while I was sewing it together. I really like the way it came out. What do you think?

Materials Needed:

  1. Fabric – fat quarters, yes! ! I like working with fat quarters and always buy a bunch when I’m at the fabric store
  2. Pellon EZ Steam – for the applique process. It’s new to the market. Fun to use, you should check it out
  3. Pellon Fusible Interfacing – Try Shape- Flex 101. It makes lightweight cotton fabric a little more substantial
  4. Sewing materials –  scissors, pins, needles, thread, disappearing ink pen
  5. Drawing materials – tape, pen and pencil
  6. Composition book
  7. Ribbon
  8. Sewing machine, iron and ironing board
  9. Printed words or design to applique

Well that’s it for now. Make sure to check out Ginny’s video tutorial over at Darling Adventures.  It’s only 8 minutes long and jam packed with great info.  You will have all the tools you need to sew your journal after seeing this video.

Also, one of the guest bloggers,  Erica from Caught on A Whim  has her journal up. Super Cute!

Thanks for stopping by. Happy Sewing!

Love it, Marni! I actually thought about using a different backing, too. Mine went up on my site yesterday. Have one more to make. 🙂

This is adorable! I love the cartoon look to it. It’s so fresh and fun! I’m so glad you could join in on the sew-along! This is my second sew-along. I always have a lot of fun with them, because everyone adds their own personal touches to the projects and they all end up looking so unique. 🙂
