Manchester Metallics Summer Bag Challenge

in Inspiration on 04/07/16

Hello shimmery goodness! Today I’m sharing a beach tote as part of the Robert Kaufman and Sew Mama Sew Manchester Metallics Summer Bag Challenge. The challenge features the new fabric line from Robert Kaufman called… Manchester Metallics.

Mancherster Metallics Main1

The manchester metallics fabric is gorgeous and has just the right amount of shimmer. I love how the fabric changes in the sunlight! It adds extra dimension and interest to this simple tote – the bag shimmers from one angle and reads subtle and tonal from another angle.

I love sewing with bold colors.  However, for this tote I went in a different direction with material blocking instead of my usual color blocking approach. I love the end result. The combination between the metallic cotton and yarn dyed linen gives the tote such a sophisticated feel.

For this bag I used 3 Robert Kaufman fabrics –  Manchester Metallics in color Silver, an Essex Yarn Dyed Cotton/Linen blend in color Steel for the side pieces and lined the tote in Essex Linen in color Indigo.

Manchester Metallics Main4

I love sewing this tote pattern. It’s roomy and large enough to hold all your beach essentials, my friend and husband both think it would make a great baby bag. The pattern is my own and I often change the size and shape depending on the end use. This time around, I added white piping to make the outside fabrics pop.

I’m considering making this into a PDF  and paper pattern. Right now I am working on a few tweaks to the pattern. Let me know if you would be interested and I can put you on my email list for when the pattern is ready.

That’s a very hand-looking tote. And you’re right about the piping – it does bring out the different greys beautifully.

I love teaching about simple shapes. It really is eye opening when you start deconstructing a repeat pattern into super simple shapes!

My block printing made easy online class starts today with module 1 out now. It will be offered again this August. More workshops and details to come.
