Want to hear my design process? Here goes:
The first step in my design process is to sew a first draft. I sketch my ideas on a piece of paper and figure out the measurements. This is where I play around.. Next is to cut and sew. It is important to take notes along the way and make sure to draft a first pattern piece. My first love is product development and I always wish I had gone in that direction for my career.
After I have my sample and the kinks worked out, it is time to pick my colors and colorways. It was a lot of fun pulling the colors together for this one. For this tote, I used men’s outdoor apparel as my inspiration. I researched mens clothing, selected a bunch of colors, created a little mood board and gave it to my husband to make the final decision. I love this orange!
Where do you get your inspiration from? Can you see the similarities with this tote and an outdoor jacket? Say LLBean, Lands End or even Patagonia?
Buying the fabric is next. My go-to online store is The Fat Quarter Shop. The Fat Quarter Shop is amazing to deal with and they have a huge selection of Kona Colors. The Kona colors used in my tote are:
- Sienna SKU K001-1332
- Steel SKU K1001-91
- Evening SKU K001-195
Last and most important, I get to work on the actual sample. I go back to my notes and start cutting and sewing. In the case of submitting a sample to a magazine, I adjust my notes and pattern where needed. Magazines use your notes to create the copy in the magazine, so it is important to provide as much detail and information as can be.
That’s it for today. Let me know if you have any questions.
This is one jam packed issue. if you want to try joggers, or a jump suit or something for the home.. This is for you.
